Overview of ENG molecular targets
Endothelial glycoprotein (Endoglin), also known as CD105, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein located on the surface of cell membrane and one of TGF-β receptor complexes. It is involved in regulating the response combined with TGF-β1, TGF-β3, Activin-A, BMP-2 and BMP-7. Endoglin is presumed to be involved in the cytoskeleton composition that affects cell morphology and migration. It plays a role in the development of cardiovascular system and vascular remodeling. In the process of heart development, the expression of Endoglin is regulated. The experimental mice with deletion of Endoglin gene died of cardiovascular abnormalities. Endoglin may be involved in autosomal dominant diseases in humans, and it is well known as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1 (HHT). It can lead to frequent nosebleeds, telangiectasia of skin and mucosa, and cause arteriovenous malformations in different organs (such as brain, lung and liver).
