Review of CD163 molecular targets
CD163 is a type I membrane protein and a member of cysteine-rich superfamily of hemoglobin scavenger receptor. Protein is involved in the clearance of hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex and is considered to have anti-inflammatory function. CD163 is also a marker of monocyte/macrophage lineage cells. It is expressed in all circulating monocytes and most tissue macrophages, such as dendritic cells of spleen, alveolar macrophages and Kupffer cells of liver, but not in macrophages, dendritic cells and Langerhans cells in lymphatic follicles. CD163 can be used to detect monocytes and histiocytes in tumors and reactive lesions. It is more sensitive than CD68 in detecting macrophages and monocytes.
