C-kit is a protein product of the proto-oncogene, a type III transmembrane protein tyrosine kinase growth factor receptor protein.80-100% of gastric interstitial sarcomas (GIST) are CD117+ and can be used in combination with CD34.CD117 can also be used to identify mast-cell-arising tumors in lymphomas and as a marker for some testicular germ cell tumors. In recent studies, CD117 has been used as a specific marker for immunohistochemical examination of gastric interstitial sarcoma (GIST), and can be used to clinically guide personalized targeted drug (Gleevec) therapy in patients with GIST.
