HNF1β (hepatocyte nuclear factor 1β) is a transcription factor associated with the embryonic development of multiple organs, particularly the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and Müllerian duct. HNF1β protein levels are significantly upregulated in ovarian clear cell tumors (including benign, borderline, and malignant), while it is rarely expressed in other types of ovarian epithelial tumors (endometrioid, serous, mucinous, etc.). The high expression of HNF1β in ovarian clear cell carcinoma is associated with hypomethylation of the CpG island in the HNF1β gene promoter region. HNF1β is an excellent marker for ovarian clear cell carcinoma. However, it is important to note that HNF1β positivity can also be observed in renal clear cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma.
