It is a neuron-specific intermediate filament protein normally expressed in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. In tumors, it is mainly expressed in ganglion cell neuromas, paragangliomas, neuroblastomas, medulloblastomas, retinoblastomas, pineal tumors, carcinoid tumors, and small cell carcinomas.
