Amplification of the CDK4 gene adjacent to the MDM2 gene is seen in a variety of tumors. One of the applications: the two markers, MDM2 and CDK4, are expressed in low-grade central osteosarcoma (sometimes confused with fibrous dysplasia) versus parosteal osteosarcoma (not easily differentiated from ossifying myositis and osteochondroma) but not in other similar benign fibrous-osteosarcoma lesions, which contributes to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of these two types of low-grade osteosarcoma.
