CD36 Molecular Targets Overview
CD36 is an 85 kDa glycoprotein also known as GPIIIb or GPI, which serves as a receptor for extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen and platelet reactive elements. CD36 antigen is expressed on monocytes, platelets, endothelial cells, and some human tumor cell lines, but not on lymphocytes or granulocytes, and it is an early marker of erythroid differentiation. CD36 is known to mediate Plasmodium falciparum adhesion.CD36 antibody induces cell degranulation, release of ATP and 5-hydroxytryptamine, increased [Ca2+]ι, and tyrosine phosphorylation of 130k Da substrate proteins.CD36 binds to platelet responsive hormones, long-chain fatty acids, oxidized LDL, collagen types I, IV, and V, and apoptotic cells.
