ERG is a member of the gene family of erythropoietin-related transcription factors, specifically the erythropoietin-related transcription factor E26 conversion sequence (ETS) transcription factor. It is expressed in lymphocytes and endothelial cells, regulating endothelial cell apoptosis and angiogenesis. Studies have shown that ERG is expressed in both benign and malignant vascular tumors. ERG antibodies exhibit high sensitivity toward vascular tumors. ERG has been found to be expressed in prostate cancer and high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN). It is rarely positively expressed in other epithelial-derived tumors outside of prostate cancer. A study showed that ERG is negatively expressed in all breast cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecological cancers, renal cancers, lung cancers, ovarian cancers, pancreatic cancers, salivary gland cancers, skin cancers, thyroid cancers, and testicular cancers. ERG has also been found to be expressed in a small number of Ewing's sarcomas, which is due to chromosomal rearrangements caused by the fusion of the ERG and EWSR1 genes. ERG may also be expressed in some meningiomas due to cross-reactivity with Fli-1.
ERG antibody reagents can specifically bind to ERG molecular antigens. Immunohistochemistry kits containing ERG antibody reagents are suitable for the precise diagnosis of prostate cancer.
